Sofia's Hagia Sofia stands as a visual reminder of the 6th century, a time when Bulgaria was part of the Byzantine Empire. In the empire's capital city, Constantinople, stood the most magnificent church in the world, a church by the same name: Hagia Sofia. Translated from Greek, it means "holy wisdom." Guess why Bulgaria's capital was christened Sofia.
