Istanbul, Turkey

It was called Constantinople for centuries. Now it is Istanbul. Why the change? According to toponymist George Stewart, Istanbul is "a name which a linguist can obviously recognize as a worn-down form of the original Constantinopolis." If you hear a different story, please correct the record. In 2010, the city was named a "European Capital of Culture." [2010]
