Schaan, Liechtenstein

February is all about the number two, and 2/22 is a palindrome too! Two problems with this steeple-bound clock: (1) the church and (2) the mountains. The former preaches a timeless eternity. The latter observes a different measure of time. Be sure to see tomorrow's post. [1984]

Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Finding maps on the landscape can become a hobby. Whenever you see one, take a picture. This map seems to have withstood the test of time well. It still looks relatively contemporary. The dude, however, seems to be caught in a time-warp. [1984]

Vaduz, Liechtenstein

The cows are Brown Swiss, but the country is not Switzerland. It's Liechtenstein: Swiss in every detail except polity. The castle on the hill is the seat of princely power: Hans Adam II rules from a perch where he can see most of the country (just a slight exaggeration). [1984]

Vaduz, Liechtenstein

As colors commonly associated with royalty, the red and blue of Liechtenstein's flag signal your presence in one of the world's smallest principalities. In fact, right there on the flag, hoisted vertically from a cottage window on the outskirts of Liechtenstein's capital, is Prince Hans Adam's crown. [1984]

Schaan, Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein's only railway connects with Austria and Switzerland. Duh! There are no other choices! It passes through Schaan (not Vaduz), but locomotives like this are no longer part of the scenery: except where they have been memorialized. [1984]

Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is ruled by a prince, and this is his castle. From his perch above the River Rhine, he can see all of Vaduz and much of his realm. The castle's oldest part dates back to the 12th century, which makes it older than the principality itself. [1984]
