Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia
The Alice does have a spring, but climatically, it's in the middle of one of the world's great deserts. Gold drew the first European inhabitants to Alice Springs, but getting there was another problem. Long distance transport was initially accomplished by camels. Today, air travel is the preferred means of overcoming the friction of distance.
