Plovidv, Bulgaria

Layers of occupation are evident on the contemporary landscape of Plovdiv. Uncovered here is the ancient Roman stadium. There is a most interesting Latin term for the arched passageway between the rows of seats. It was called a vomitorium because it allowed spectators to "spew forth" after an event was over. [2010]
