Lidgerwood, North Dakota, USA
The railroads opened up the Great Plains, and the grain elevators gave each town an economic base, a place for farmers to bring their grain for shipping out to eastern markets. Modern economies of scale are now catching up with grain elevators in a game of 'survival of the biggest.'
