Madrid, Spain

Music confined to concert halls is so elitist; music on the streets is so egalitarian. And, there's always music on the streets of Europe. Except that it's not usually coming from instruments like these (accordion excepted). How about buying one of their CDs? Discount if you can name the percussion instruments. [2009]

  1. Those are hammered dulcimers, or salterio as it is probably known in Spain. An ancient instrument that was the precursor to the pianoforte. These exist in slightly different forms all over the world. European and American dulcimers tend to have mixolydian or modern chromatic tunings. I can't hear what those particular instruments sound like, but judging by the soundboard layout, it's probably very similar in tone to a harpsichord.
