The salient feature is the hand. It belongs to the former ruler of Syria, Hafez al Assad, whose heavy hand brought the country much-needed stability. But it was also the hand of repression. He and the rock-solid flag in the background made their attempt at forging national unity out of ethnoreligious diversity. We may soon see if it worked.
