In the United States, life-saving stations are
historical curiosities, but in Britain they are still depended upon to rescue mariners in distress. The Whitstable Lifeboat Station was founded not that long ago, in 1963. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution currently oversees 444 lifeboats around the UK. [2003]
