You arrive at Amsterdam Centraal anticipating picturesque canals and canal houses. Your hopes are high and you are ready to be astounded. Then, into view sweeps the Dutch Golden Age, a picture postcard from the 17th century, punctuated by three exclamation points from the 19th century, the three spires on the Basilica of St. Nicholas.
