Here stands one of the gates to Chefchaouen's medina as it existed a generation ago, when the population was thoroughly Berber and tourists were scarce. The djellaba is the traditional garb for Moroccan men, but the pattern here is unique to the Rif. Unlike most of Morocco, Chefchaouen was Spanish before the country gained independence in 1956.
