Beyond this gate is the Topkapi Palace, from which the Ottoman sultans governed a great empire for 400 years. To get here by sea, nature provided two more gates: (1) a constriction of the Bosporus guarded by castles on either side, and (2) a companion strait, the Dardanelles, through which fleets had to pass before reaching the empire's core.
