Symbolically, Berne is the
ursa major of the terrestrial realm. The whole canton is a virtual bear pit: bears everywhere. Vexillogical bears, that is. There's even a toponymic bear in the name. And there are some real bears in a park by the river Aare. No bears left in the Berne countryside, but lots of them in the city. [1984]
