Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Here's another Cool Globe. This one is tightly coupled with Charlotte's status as a Tree City USA, an accolade bestowed by the Arbor Day Foundation. Do you see the tree canopy on the globe? You will also see it in the city. Residents enjoy knowing they are fighting climate change and paying lower heating and cooling bills because they live in a City of Trees. [2020]

Annapolis, Maryland, USA

In posh Annapolis, goofy-looking chicken sculptures are completely unexpected. Maybe that is why they have been so popular. It seems their creator was inspired by an inane public debate over whether people would be allowed to raise chickens in their back yards. It went on for over a year. So, which came first, the chicken or the egg? [2018]

New York, New York, USA

The countdown to Earth Day 2023 begins today. Don't shrug off the responsibility to make every day Earth Day. Otherwise, the Anthropocene will end, and a new era of Earth history will begin, an era without human inhabitants. So sayeth Atlas, the titan. [2018]

Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Earth Day: 364 days and counting. Let's make every day Earth Day, lest we end up on a planet looking like this. Through greenhouse gases that pollute the atmosphere you can barely see the continents. The message: "You can curb greenhouse gas by simply adjusting your thermostat." That's one Cool Globe for our planet's carbon-challenged Anthropocene. [2020]

Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Earth Day: one day and counting. Ocean waves have a higher energy density than any other type of renewable. Even though we currently lack the technology to fully exploit wave energy, today's dreams are tomorrow's reality, as symbolized here by a three-dash line across the Arabian Sea. That's one Cool Globe for our planet's energy-challenged Anthropocene. [2020]

Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Earth Day: two days and counting. Charlotte is bound to a plan to create a circular economy that produces zero waste. How many other cities have such commitments to the planet's preservation? That's one Cool Globe for our planet's waste-challenged Anthropocene. [2020]

New York, New York, USA

Anchor Cities of Megalopolis: New York. It's recognized as a "jacks of all trades" around the world. Get it? If Megalopolis had a capital, New York would be it. Why? Because it's the city all other cities look up to. Only London is on par. To you, NYC sends hugs (O) and kisses (X). Again, get it? [2022]

Mansura, Louisiana, USA

February is all about the number two, and 2/22 is a palindrome too! The veterans got this one right. The world globe here is tilted on its axis just the way it should be (unlike some others). It's part of the parish's veterans memorial. Remember: In Louisiana, parish equals county. Be sure to see yesterday's post. [2022]

Seoul, South Korea

February is all about the number two, and 2/22 is a palindrome too! Geographically Yours has complained repeatedly about any world globe that is not tilted 23½° on its axis, but here is a unique instance of one tilted too much. Perhaps it is so people on the street can see Korea. Be sure to see tomorrow's post. [2016]

Bandung, Indonesia

"Let a new Asia and a new Africa be born." And, guess which country wanted to emerge as the leader of these aborning realms when the pathbreaking Bandung Conference convened in 1955. Indonesia, of course: the world's fourth most populous country (out of almost 200!). Enjoy what remains of Geography Awareness Week 2021! [2016]

Liverpool, England, UK

World globes are an appropriate motif for Geography Awareness Week and for port cities like Liverpool. Here, dockside, golden yellow continents remind everyone of the prosperity promised by world trade. As for black oceans: maybe symbolic of Liverpool itself. The name refers to a pool of dark water. Vienna, Austria

Today is the apex of Geography Awareness Week 2021. Here is Geographically Yours when he was at his apex. From this blue-mesh platform he was recording a YouTube video for his online class even before there were YouTube videos or online classes: all in the interest of geography education. [2004]

Miami, Florida, USA

Paving the way for Geography Awareness Week this year were the Glasgow Climate accords. Yet, the agreement will allow greenhouse gases to rise by 14% over the next nine years even though they need to fall by 45%. Perhaps this memorial in Woodlawn Park Cemetery is destined to be seen as a harbinger of things to come: a graveyard home for our planet. [2014]

Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

What better place to begin Geography Awareness Week than with a 5-story high globe. Inside is the theater of North Carolina's Natural Science Museum. Now, if we could just get it tilted on its axis, geographers would be so much happier. [2018]

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

When this picture was taken (see the date in brackets?) the independent UAE had not even reached its majority (i.e., it had not turned 21). As a young nation, it could not quite figure out how to fit together the global jigsaw. Look closely. See Australia? Where's Tasmania? Sea the Mediterraean? There's Tasmania! [1992]

Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Initial impression: The world is being being buried in trash. Then, you notice the pipes that lead to the surface. Intended impression: The world should be channeling the energy of landfill gas to the surface and using it to generate electricity. "Waste not, want not!" according to the plaque at its base. (See it?) [2020]

Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

"Properly care for your car's tires." That's the message of this globe. See the tread marks and tire pressure nozzles? An efficiently running car eliminates thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere: Carbon dioxide pollution is what it was called in the 1970s; but, after the election of 1980, we didn't take it seriously. Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Look closely and don't scream when you discover it is not simply a decorative sphere. It's a world globe. Do you see Australia and Southeast Asia trying to make their screams heard? What is the entire world screaming about? Global warming. Planet Earth is calling out for help. And the City of Charlotte wants you to know it. Thanks, Edvard Munch. [2020]

Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

♫ These Are a Few of My Favorite Things ♫ ~ World Globes: Cool Globes, right? That's the name of the exhibit along Tryon Street in Charlotte for the rest of the year. Each one has a story to tell about sustainability. Finding a world globe anywhere on the landscape is a real treat for geophiles! Expect to see more cool globes on Geographically Yours in 2021. Clovis, New Mexico, USA

In Clovis, the world is within your grasp. Most global sculptures are located downtown. This one, however, is located on the main drag out of town. Do you like the way the American flag (the size of a continent) flutters imperially above the the whole world? [2018]
