Damascus, Syria

Here is (or was) one of the oldest cafés in Damascus. And, here is one of the age-old rituals that goes on every day: relaxing with the narjilah, or water pipe. It has infiltrated American culture as the hookah, a name not used much in Syria. Here is, also, one of the age-old practices that characterizes traditional cities: gendered spaces. [1996]
