High above the city of Damascus, in the folds of the Lebanese mountains, the Barada River begins. The water is so pure, no treatment is necessary. Just bend down, cup your hands, and imbibe. Eventually, these waters will collect at the base of the mountains and make Damascus one of the world's great oasis cities. [1993]
