Happy people make a happy place. Aleppo is no longer a happy place. Syria could have bucked the trend and tried a different path. The hereditary dictatorship could have looked around, seen what was happening in other Arab countries, and said: "We will try to manage the transition to a multi-party democracy peacefully." [1995]
