Like flowers in bloom on telephone-pole stems, the colorful state flags of the united States of America offer unflappable poise and a history lesson on federalism. If we had a contest for the best state flag, what state would win? The candidates are on display in Woodland Park. [2005]
Having just taught the Missouri Compromise of 1820 in my U.S. History class a couple of weeks ago and now approaching the Civil War, I thought this was a cool juxtaposition of these topics. Incidentally, the North American Vexillological Association conducted a poll on its website back in 2001 that asked the same question... Apparently, Midwestern flags are not very popular, including Missouri and Minnesota. Personally, I think my favorite is #6 (Arizona).
