Tbilisi, Georgia
Based on location, this would be a sidewalk market. It comprises a few crates that occupy pedestrian space by the side of the road. Battambang, Cambodia
In American parlance, we might call it a 'farmers market,' but that doesn't fit the rest of the world. "Of course, it's a farmers market" would be the reaction. "Who else would be growing the food we eat?" Based on location, we might call this a central market. Vendors occupy a market hall in the middle of town and their displays sprawl out onto the streets. The Burnt Column is one of the most important architectural remnants of Istanbul's Byzantine past. It was dedicated by Constantine the Great in 330 AD to mark the site of the Roman Empire's new capital, the New Rome, on the site of Byzantium. Today, it gives its name to a stop on the city's metro: Çemberlitaş. [2010]
