Belize City, Belize

It's neither central market nor sidewalk market. So, we need a third category: terminal market. It is located at the bus terminal, where it is convenient for the neighborhood and patrons who come to the city from neighboring towns. [2015]

Tbilisi, Georgia

Based on location, this would be a sidewalk market. It comprises a few crates that occupy pedestrian space by the side of the road. If you are walking, there is no way to avoid it, and that's what makes it a successful location. In our typology so far, we have central markets and sidewalk markets. [2015]

Battambang, Cambodia

In American parlance, we might call it a 'farmers market,' but that doesn't fit the rest of the world. "Of course, it's a farmers market" would be the reaction. "Who else would be growing the food we eat?" Based on location, we might call this a central market. Vendors occupy a market hall in the middle of town and their displays sprawl out onto the streets. Istanbul, Turkey

The Burnt Column is one of the most important architectural remnants of Istanbul's Byzantine past. It was dedicated by Constantine the Great in 330 AD to mark the site of the Roman Empire's new capital, the New Rome, on the site of Byzantium. Today, it gives its name to a stop on the city's metro: Çemberlitaş. [2010]

Istanbul, Turkey

Even though it's Istanbul, it could be New York, London, or Paris. And, he could be Muslim, Christian, or Jew; liberal, conservative, or moderate; thinker, doer, or feeler; straight, gay, or bi. What preconceived notions do you bring to this scene? Could be that none of the above really matters. But, you'll never know until you say 'hello.' [2010]

Istanbul, Turkey

It may be that our modern shopping malls had their origins in the covered bazaars of the Middle East. Istanbul's Spice Bazaar (a.k.a., Egyptian Bazaar) dates back to the 1660s. Many like to think of it, along with the city's Grand Bazaar, as the western terminus of the Silk Road. [2007]

Plant City, Florida, USA

Fancy some alligator sausage? You came to the right place. Although it looks like that gator is about to eat that Angus, it is actually us humans who are about to eat both that gator and that Angus. As for alligator sausage: Of course, it tastes like chicken. [2014]
