They may be called crab-eating macaques, but they will actually eat anything. That may be why they are one of the least endangered species in Asia's humid tropics. There may be other reasons as well, and this band portrait from the Taipei Zoo may suggest one of them. [2011]

If you are in Bangkok and see a cyclist with an orange vest, flag him down and jump on. He wants the business and you want the fun of a speedy and breezy lift to your destination. Of course, if he is idle, he will do what everyone else in the world does: worship his cell phone. [2016]

It's the dome of the Sultan Ahmet Camii, or Blue Mosque. Actually, it is the interior of the central dome, which is flanked by four other main domes, and then eight secondary domes. It is as orderly as the heavens above: no chaos here, perfect order, and visual splendor. [2010]

Saksaywaman, Peru

Here are the building blocks of Inca architecture. The site happens to be Saksaywaman, but the practice of fitting together large stones without mortar extended up and down the Andes. Would you recognize this stone as a hexagon? The game to play here is "name the polygon." You will find everything up to a dodecagon! [2001]

Cardiff, Wales, UK

Under one roof, scores of businesses compete for the Welsh food dollar. Each has a stall, and each stall needs to be supplied with its daily victuals. Here one of the butchers, with his signatory apron, unloads a tray of meat from the refrigerated van that pulls up to the main entrance. After all, why hide food deliveries in the alley? [2015]

Arnaldo Pomodoro is famous for his bronze spheres, disks, and slabs, but they are always less than solid. This one is in his home city of Milan. Too bad people have to turn their back on it while they perch on its grassy plinth. [2008]

The location is perfect for these beauty queens: Plaza las Delicias. They just add to the 'delights' that grace the landscape in front of the Lions Fountain. Ponce is Puerto Rico's second city, and it used to be more important than San Juan. [2009]

National flags in a place of prominence along Orchard Road? Maybe not. The flag of Singapore has a red stripe, white stripe, and emblem; only two of the three are represented here. Springfield, Illinois, USA

Happy 198th birthday, Illinois! Springfield is the third city to serve as the capital of the state, and this is the sixth building to serve as the capitol of the state. Get it? In the capitol's backyard is the newest monument, the Fallen Firefighters Memorial, but the statehouse is so well designed, you don't even notice that this isn't the building's front. [2015]

Winger, Minnesota, USA

What's a polar bear doing at the busiest intersection in Winger? Looking for someplace to eat, of course. Since the nearby restaurant had no seal blubber on the menu, he settled for a picnic on the lawn. Public art is for everyone, even those who live in towns of only 200 people. [2012]

Landisville, New Jersey, USA

Combine flat land with immigrant labor and farm technology: The result is one of the gardens that make New Jersey the "garden state." More important though, is relative location: New York City is at one end of the state and Philadelphia is at the other. [2015]

The Eugene covered bridge has provided a way across the Vermillion River since either 1873 or 1885. The state historical marker claims the former and the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges claims the latter.  No matter which date is correct, the Eugene bridge deserves to be on the National Register of Historic Places, and  it is. Barlow, Ohio, USA

The setting of the Mill Branch covered bridge is entirely artificial, but at least it has been preserved. In 1990, it was moved to the Barlow Fair Grounds, where it helped Ohio celebrate its bicentennial in 2003. Although it misses the Little Hocking River, it is proud of its promotion to a public relations position. [2016]

Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA

Walter's Mill covered bridge was moved to Somerset County's historical park in 1986, just in time to rescue it from destruction. Today it is open to pedestrians only. Thanks to the half-cladding, you can see the top of the Kingpost truss, but if you enter and inspect the architectural underpinnings, you will experience a little cognitive dissonance. [2010]

The name of the street is Temple. The name of the ironmonger that makes signs like this is West Craft Metal Arts. The roadside stand may be closed for the season, but the strawberry crop is already in the field and under the watchful eye of the old farmhouse. Up goes a bulkhead, but notice there are no dunes between the houses and the beach. The width of the beach will dissipate some of the energy of ocean storms, but no houses anywhere on the Atlantic coast should be built directly on the beach. If you are going to build near the water's edge, at least put a dune between your home and the sea. It will try to protect you. But, don't be too confident. Since Hurricane Sandy in 2012, house raising has been going on all along the Jersey shore. Given rising sea levels and rising storm possibilities, home owners will do all they can to buy a few more years. In this neighborhood the houses are not along the shoreline itself, but several blocks inland. Still, Atlantic City is on a barrier island, and totally vulnerable. [2016]
